Bullying & harassment : challenging the status quo

The recent CERA case has raised the issue of appropriate behaviour in the workplace.  I’m not going to comment on that issue; I don’t have the details and haven’t seen the report.  However, the reporting around it highlighted the differences in interpretation of the same behaviour.  What one would find offensive another staffer saw as ‘a bit of fun’.    This flags up the question of the difference between intent and third party perception; It is not about the intent of the person making the jokes or comments, it’s about how it is received and perceived by others that matters.  This difference in interpretation sometimes makes it difficult for people to understand the line between appropriate and inappropriate conduct.  Everybody is different and what one person might brush off as harmless fun may have a detrimental effect on another person.

Career advice from the Dalai Lama

All of us at some time will have received career advice, some good, some downright crazy.   My school career counsellor suggested I should be a vet.  Me, who couldn’t even cut up a worm in biology and goes wobbly at the sight of blood.  From memory I smiled politely, exited out, and didn't follow a shred of their advice.  Hence I'm doing what I do now (and love it!).

Over the next few years companies will start to experience a steady flow of retirees leaving the workforce.  They are also finding that the millennial workforce does not have the same values around loyalty and longevity of employment with their employer.  A Future Workforce study in 2012 showed that 91% of people born between 1977 and 1997 said they anticipated staying in a job for less than three years.  This then raises a question around how a company can future proof their workforce for further growth.  Recent research by Randstad highlighted  that 64% of companies expressed concern over gaps in their leadership pipeline.

France’s parliament has passed a law allowing workers to anonymously donate their days off to a colleague with a seriously sick child.  The idea came from the case of a man whose colleagues donated 170 days while his son was battling cancer.

How to have a Courageous Conversation

In an earlier blog post I talked about how a focus on workplace culture drives double digit business growth.  Given a focus on strategy v. culture,  I've heard it said that 'culture eats strategy for breakfast".
