Silly or Sackable : The Peril of email

Email etiquette.  Forwarding on jokey and risque emails has become part & parcel of today's communications.  It's all too easy to hit the 'Send' button on a circulated  'funny' (or not).  However, recent case law has highlighted the limits of innapropriate  email behaviour, and the costly consquences.

Consider this scenario.  You’re hiring.  You have three candidates who can equally do the job, but come from quite diverse  backgrounds.  You apply the final filtering factor ... fit  with the company' .  Sounds reasonable?  Well Yes.. and No.  It depends on what ‘fit’ means to the selector(s) and the extent to which they challenge conscious and unconscious  bias or prejudice.  How do we describe ‘fit’?  ‘They’ll fit in here…”.   What does that mean?; values fit, personality fit, more like me or less like me?

Life is busy.  We're often being told to 'Stop and smell the roses'.  Is it, though,  a cliché?  Not according to research which suggests that taking time to notice whats around you and enjoy the moment contributes to wellbeing.  The following information  from the Health Action Trust Nelson hit my Inbox.  It made perfect sense  and is so simple to apply.  I wanted to share it more widely.

"It's life Jim, but not as we know it"...

Recently I took part in a ‘Frame the Future’ workshop run by Nelson City Council (NCC) about what the region in which I live, Nelson/Tasman in New Zealand, would look like in 2060.  It was interesting, and challenging, to try and step into the shoes of people who would be living and working here.  A range of vision statements started to emerge; ‘big city opportunities with small village values’, ‘seamless living between work and personal’, ‘a people  and environment centered community’.  Common, themes  of self-reliance, culture, environmental impact, recreation and equity emerged.

It’s all change in Animal Land.  The Hare has been nominated as the internal change champion.  The boss, the Lion, has plans - BIG plans.  You’re a pretty action orientated kinda’ guy”  says the Lion,   “I know you can make it happen”.  That’s it, the Hare is off and  running.  Consultation, focus groups, change T-shirts proclaiming  ‘Just Nike It’.
