Bullying & harassment : challenging the status quo

The recent CERA case has raised the issue of appropriate behaviour in the workplace.  I’m not going to comment on that issue; I don’t have the details and haven’t seen the report.  However, the reporting around it highlighted the differences in interpretation of the same behaviour.  What one would find offensive another staffer saw as ‘a bit of fun’.    This flags up the question of the difference between intent and third party perception; It is not about the intent of the person making the jokes or comments, it’s about how it is received and perceived by others that matters.  This difference in interpretation sometimes makes it difficult for people to understand the line between appropriate and inappropriate conduct.  Everybody is different and what one person might brush off as harmless fun may have a detrimental effect on another person.

Find ways to embed it into everyday thinking.

"It's life Jim, but not as we know it"...

Recently I took part in a ‘Frame the Future’ workshop run by Nelson City Council (NCC) about what the region in which I live, Nelson/Tasman in New Zealand, would look like in 2060.  It was interesting, and challenging, to try and step into the shoes of people who would be living and working here.  A range of vision statements started to emerge; ‘big city opportunities with small village values’, ‘seamless living between work and personal’, ‘a people  and environment centered community’.  Common, themes  of self-reliance, culture, environmental impact, recreation and equity emerged.

It’s all change in Animal Land.  The Hare has been nominated as the internal change champion.  The boss, the Lion, has plans - BIG plans.  You’re a pretty action orientated kinda’ guy”  says the Lion,   “I know you can make it happen”.  That’s it, the Hare is off and  running.  Consultation, focus groups, change T-shirts proclaiming  ‘Just Nike It’.
