Let’s face it, few people like or embrace conflict situations.   Given the choice, most people avoid facing up to conflict, whether that’s in the workplace, in our personal lives or when somebody has jumped the queue in the supermarket.  It takes courage (and skill) to get the issue out into the open and move it to a positive resolution.

Changing Course, Avoiding Collision

Often conflict occurs because individuals are wedded to their path, their way of doing things,  their belief that they are right, that the other person is wrong and that the other person needs to change.   You can’t change people, only they can do that themselves (with the aid of a nudge, feedback, coaching, self-awareness and personal will).  You can however change how you respond to them.  That’s different.

From Chaos to Calm : Dealing with Difficult People

We've all encountered 'difficult people' in our lives.   We respond in a variety of ways - fight, flight, defensiveness, avoidance, try to turn the person around.    Sometimes our responses result in us  becoming  a mirror image of the 'difficult person'.  But the problems not with us, hey?.... 'they started it'.  Now we have the potential for a full blown  'conflict cycle'.
